I think most would agree that it can sometimes be a bit of a headache to read the play by play accounts on the box score pages. It’s especially difficult to keep track of who is currently pitching as you read down the play by play account.  Also, you sort of need a little bit of knowledge on whether or not a player is left or right handed.

Now, play by play account viewing is a lot more enjoyable with this new script.  Take a look at the features below:

1.  Player names are now shaded in blue if they are left handed and pink if they are right handed.  Also, I changed the player names into hyperlinks to their player cards.

Note:  Some players have the same name so they need to be handled a bit differently.  I’ve included hyperlinks for all duplicate names.  In the 2010 set, for example, ‘C.Lee’ could be either Cliff Lee or Carlos Lee.  So, next to C.Lee you’ll find two links numberered 1 & 2.  There’s really no easy way for the script to find exactly which C.Lee is being used in the game so this method will do for now.

2.  Clutch situations are now in “dark orange“.

3.  When Pitch Count Fatigue level gets below F9 the color changes to red.

4.  Ball Park (BPHR/BPOUTS) results appear at the bottom of the play account.  This only applies in the 2010 set.

5.  Pitcher roll percent totals also appear at the bottom.  This only applies in the 2010 set.

The script will currently work with the 2010 and Back to the ’90s player sets.  I was hoping to add All-Time Greats VI but that player list is way too large for me to handle right now.  Hopefully I can add ATG6 sometime in the near future.

SportingNews just announced yesterday that the Strat-O-Matic Baseball: 2010 Season has been released.  Whenever a new season arrives the first thing usually I do is browse the player cards.  As I was going through the cards yesterday I was thinking that it would be great if there was a quicker and more effective way to find cards fit the type of ballpark I use (I usually choose AT&T Park as a ballpark simply because I’m a Giants fan :) ).  This year, the ballpark factors (si 10/10 hr 5/10) for AT&T Park mainly favor right handed players.  When searching for pitchers that are best suited for AT&T Park one would look for pitchers who have low ballpark diamonds on the right side.  Since the ballpark home run rating for AT&T Park on the left side is relatively low (1-5) one can still find an effective pitcher who’s ballpark home runs on the left side are on the high side.

Searching for a pitcher that suits AT&T park can be a bit tedious with the Player Set Browser because you basically need to go through and open each pitcher card to find their ballpark home run ratings.  So, I decided to write a script to make this search a bit easier.  At first, I was thinking about a way that would analyze each card and categorize cards with the type of ballpark it would perform well in.  A high ballpark diamonds pitcher would be a better fit in a pitcher’s park and a pitcher with a low amount ballpark diamonds would be a better fit in a hitter’s park.  Then you have ballparks that favors righties (AT&T) and parks, such as Miller Park, that favors lefties this year.

Since the average Strat-O-Matic manager already has a good understanding of ballpark advantages I decided to write a script that simply adds two columns to the Player Set Browser for each player’s left and right ballpark home run diamonds.  Now, it’s a little easier and quicker to find those bargain pitchers for your ballpark.

After three years of playing MLB The Show RTTS, I’ve finally broken a record in Hall of Fame mode.  I really wasn’t even trying to break the record until the last week of the season.  Watch the video below and hear Matt Vasgersian call the shot.

Here are a few baserunning tips to think about when deciding on a lineup.

1.  Think more aggressive against a quality starting pitchers.  Taking more baserunning chances against guys like Tim Lincecum makes perfect sense.  There usually aren’t very many baserunning opportunities against these pitchers so you need to make the most out of these chances.

2.  Be less aggressive on the base paths against pitchers like Nick Blackburn.  These pitcher cards allow a high number of singles and other on-base chances which means you’ll have an ample amount of scoring chances.

3.  Be aware of the home field advantage max rule.  When you are playing on the road you may lose some rolls due to the home field advantage rule so you may want to run a little more aggressively.

One of the cool things about playing the Strat-O-Matic Online baseball simulation game is you get to decide, as a manager, when you want to start a real-life journeyman over a real-life All-Star.  What you know about these players in real life doesn’t matter.  You don’t need to consider how old they are and you know they won’t get better or worse over time because their true talent levels are already laid out on the player cards.  It’s all about probability.

I was able to find some match ups where my .50 cent pitcher out performed the opponents multi-million dollar starting pitcher.  I’m sure I would have found a lot more of these matchups but TSN had to remove some box scores from 2001-2005 because of space issues.

1969 Season: Ken Brett (.50M) vs Dave Boswell (6.92M)

Ken Brett blanks Cats, 2-0

Ken Brett pitched a complete game shutout despite allowing 6 walks.  Brett ended up 1-4 for the season but had a lot of no decisions.  He pitched well for me.  He ended up with a 3.02 ERA in 12 starts.

2003 Season:  Paul Abbott (.50M) vs Tim Hudson (8.87M)

Holey Sox beat Bosox 10-3

I found a few box scores from the 2003 season.  In this game, Hudson got rocked in the 2nd inning as my team scored 5 runs with 5 if the 6 hits being singles.  Abbott was 12-4 after this game but ended up with a 13-9 record.

2003 Season:  Paul Abbott (.50M) vs Barry Zito (7.13M)

Holey Sox blow out Brunswick Bosox, 12-0

Abbott went 7 strong scoreless innings striking out 6 batters and walking 1.

Lefty killer, Edgar Renteria, blasted a home run in the bottom of the third inning.  Three batters were walked after that which led to three other runs in the inning.

2007 Season: Kevin Slowey (.50M) vs Fausto Carmona (7.00M)

Kevin Slowey shuts out Panthers, 10-0

Kevin Slowey pitched a complete game shutout with 9 strikeouts in AT&T Park while Fausto Carmona went 8 2/3 innings allowing 5 earned runs.

6 other Slowey vs ‘Goliath’ matchups:

Another match up against Fausto Carmona (7.ooM)

Javier Vazquez (5.44M) charged with the loss

Cole Hamels (4.96M) loses pitching duel

Matt Cain (4.75M) is the losing pitcher

Javier Vazquez (5.44M) absorbs another loss

A.J. Burnett suffers the loss
